The start of their song ‘Botanist’ set me up for a fall. It deliberately made me anticipate something that was never came. Instead of a snare drum following in the banjo-esque sounding string instrument, there were handclaps, instead of a tinny little drumbeat on a rock kit, it serves up a full bodied beat with double kicks and everything! This song is just all about surprises and it’s got me loving it.

This 6 piece indie/rock outfit from Adelaide, South Australia, are wearing suits in their profile pic. At first this seems a bit wankerish, but after listening to their song ‘Pixelation’ you can see why. These guys are polished, not just in sections but the whole deal. I honestly think these guys could be listened to on commercial radio and people would be singing along.
It might not be my favourite music, sounds a bit too poppy and ‘safe’, but in parts the lead singers, Mathew James Fisher, voice blows me away. Credit where credits due.

The Paul Winn Band list Dave Mathews Band, John Mayer and The Police as their influences, and their comes out accordingly. I can hear the vocals of Dave Mathews Band and the melodic styling of John Mayer. Being less than a million years old I couldnt tell you what The Police sound like, but i’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say its something similar.
‘Nothings New’ is off their new album, which follows on from their first self titled 2004 LP. These guys seem to already be going somewhere, having reached the final 20 of the Perisher Blue Launch Your Band Competition. Well, when I say ‘already’ going somewhere I don’t mean their 14 year old lyrical Beethovens, if their listing The Police as their influences they must be what? 28 - 30? :P
